Symbiotics has invested $4 million in Platinum Credit Uganda to deepen financial inclusion and expand lending to underserved communities across the country.

“Symbiotics is delighted to partner with Platinum Credit Uganda through the arrangement of a USD 4 million investment, supporting the growth of their MSME portfolio and reinforcing PCU’s commitment to driving inclusive and sustainable development across Uganda,” said Duncan Frayne, Regional Director of Sub-Saharan Africa at Symbiotics.

The investment, extended to Platinum Credit Uganda — a subsidiary of Platcorp Group — is aimed at scaling up financing for low-income households and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), segments widely regarded as the backbone of Uganda’s economy.

MSMEs account for more than 90% of private sector firms in Uganda, yet many remain locked out of traditional financial systems due to longstanding structural barriers. Limited collateral, informal business structures, and inconsistent income streams often prevent entrepreneurs and low-income families from accessing affordable credit.

The $4 million facility carries a 24-month term and was disbursed on December 22, 2025. The capital injection has already enabled Platinum Credit Uganda to roll out a phased expansion of enhanced loan products targeting MSMEs and households. Applications under the expanded programmes are now open across all branches and digital platforms.

The funding is expected to strengthen the lender’s MSME portfolio, providing working capital that allows entrepreneurs to hire staff, invest in equipment, and expand operations. Increasing financial inclusion among Ugandan MSMEs enables them to access the capital they need to innovate and grow, stimulating the country’s economy and unlocking further potential.

Beyond enterprise lending, the investment will also increase Platinum Credit Uganda’s capacity to serve low- and middle-income households. Access to flexible credit products can help families manage essential expenses such as school fees, healthcare costs, and housing improvements, directly enhancing community resilience.

The announcement marks another milestone for Platinum Credit Uganda, which currently serves more than 100,000 clients nationwide. Over half of its customers (55%) are based in rural areas, while 28% are youth clients and 23% are women. Additionally, 47% of its MSME borrowers are women — metrics that underscore the company’s stated commitment to serving marginalized groups and expanding meaningful financial access.

“This multi-million investment from Symbiotics will be instrumental in helping Platinum Credit Uganda expand vital financial access to underserved groups in Uganda. Our partnership with Symbiotics will fuel their work — and the work of Platcorp as a whole — in creating meaningful, sustainable change and driving impact financing across Africa,” said Brett Sievwright, CEO of Platcorp Group.

Albert Abaasa, Managing Director of Platinum Credit Uganda, said the funding would translate directly into tangible community impact.

“Symbiotics’ investment will have a transformative effect on our work and directly translate to community benefits, business growth, and improved financial inclusion. Through our partnership, Symbiotics is using finance as a force for good. Uganda has a wealth of talent and micro-entrepreneurs, but for too long, they have been shut out of traditional finance. Microfinance provides an exciting opportunity to drive growth in communities and see success ripple over the wider economy.”
