Investec Asset Management, through its Africa Private Equity capability, has recently concluded a further equity investment in Mobisol, following the initial investment made in late 2016.

The follow-on investment, as with the initial investment, was led by Investec and included consortium partners  -  the IFC and FMO.

This follow-on equity investment, along with significant new debt facilities secured during the last six months, will help fund the further expansion and growth of the business.

“Since our initial investment Mobisol has continued to successfully expand its operating footprint, most notably with entry into Kenya, whilst also strengthening and innovating around its product offering and its business model,” said  Mark Jennings, Investment Principal at Investec Asset Management.

Mobisol, headquartered in Berlin, is an innovative company addressing the demand from off-grid households, numbering over 100 million in Africa, for a full energy solution rather than a lighting-only solution.

It focuses on the larger end of the solar home systems market delivering solutions that are powerful enough to run a range of household appliances.

All Mobisol systems can power several LED lights, a cell-phone charger, a radio, and an LCD TV, while larger system sizes in the range can support additional products – for example, an iron, hair clippers and a refrigerator.

Mobisol operates in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda where it has sold more than 100,000 solar home systems enabling some 500,000 people to benefit from solar energy in their home.

An extensive product range and pay-as-you-go software system, combined with local partner capabilities and on-the-ground presence, are enabling Mobisol to extend its reach through partnerships in other countries.

Investec Asset Management established an African private equity capability in 2008.

The Private Equity strategy focuses on growth capital and buyout investments in established mid-market and larger companies in Africa, with the objective of supporting the creation of local or regional champions in their respective industries.
